How much does it cost to hire an Interior House painter?

To get an accurate price on a full repaint on an entire house, we’d need take a brief look just to get an idea of size but more importantly the level of prep work involved. What does this mean? Well, for a painter, the existing condition of surfaces is a huge part of our day to day jobs. We need to check for things such as dents in the walls that will need filling, large holes that need to be plastered up, mould stains, unsealed surfaces such as new gyprock, new skirting boards that must be gapped up, movement within the walls that has caused cracks, are the walls going from dark to light and will need more coats, the list goes on. On larger scaled jobs it can work in your favour to get an accurate quotation over hiring hourly as with size comes efficiency. However, you can expect to pay $75 per hour for a good painter on the Gold Coast. This hourly rate does not include materials but you will save heaps of cash on paint by using a painting company since our volume of purchases through Dulux allow us to get drums 20-40% cheaper than the public can.

More than just a paint job

Increased Unit Value with Surfers Paradise Interior Repaints

The numbers don’t lie, a freshly painted interior will undoubtedly add value to your house. With Gold Coast real estate prices rocketing with the now median house price sitting at over $1.1 million, many retirees and working professionals are looking to capitalize by selling, downsizing and renting out their property as the hot coastal life attracts younger folk looking to live here.

According to a HomeGain survey from 2012, giving your interior a fresh coat of paint can deliver a whopping 107% return on investment, while sprucing up the exterior could net you a solid 55% ROI. It’s clear that a bit of DIY painting can go a long way in boosting your home’s value when it’s time to sell and rent. Painted homes sell faster, rent faster and command higher prices. It’s a process that doesn’t require planning permissions and doesn’t destroy the bank.

Did you know, the estimated population of Surfers Paradise was 29,832 as of 2023 and is one of the fastest growing populations in the Gold Coast. The median house price now stands at a whopping $3,030,000, properties for sale spend a median of 52 days listed before being sold.

Pride in Prep

Interior prep is especially crucial because the closer environment demands precision and perfection. Every imperfection, especially at eye level, becomes glaringly obvious as you walk around your house. Those flaws become even more noticeable when your eyes have nothing else to do but scan the walls. Next time you’re on the toilet, put down your iPhone for a couple of minutes and take a good look around. Proper prep ensures those imperfections are smoothed out, so your paint can shine without any unwanted distractions but also it ensures:

  • Proper paint adhesion to the surface for lasting performance
  • No stains from the surface bleed through into the finished paint
  • Durability

Surface preparation is a tiresome and time-consuming process that is paramount to an imperial level finish. Depending on the scope of the project, home prep can take up a full day and is just as vital as the painting itself. A large chunk of properties on the Gold Coast are 80s built and thus repaints sometimes need a bit of TLC.

We’ll meticulously inspect for damage like cracks, screw holes, smoking stains, and gaps along door frames and walls corners caused by movement. Even if the wall itself is in great condition, previous poor paint jobs can leave runs, which we’ll sand down to ensure a flawless finish—because taking pride in our work is what sets us apart.

Interior Paint Sheens Explained

A paint sheen refers to the level of gloss or shine in a paint’s finish. It indicates how reflective the paint surface will be once it dries. Paint sheens range from flat (no shine) to high-gloss (very shiny), and each type is suited for different purposes, higher sheens are better suited where durability, moisture resistance, and easy cleaning are essential. The inside of your home will commonly contain all 3 types of paints.

Low Sheen

Low sheen is a nice mix between gloss and flat/matte. It’s best used in high traffic areas like hallways, bedrooms, living rooms and will make up the bulk of any interior paint.

Flat/Matte

Contains no shine and is entirely matte, it’s almost always used on ceilings where cleaning is rarely needed. Since flat paint does not reflect light, its very easy on the eye.

Gloss

Gloss makes up the least of any interior job and is super easy to clean. Think doors and skirting, window frames, anywhere where dirty hands can get.

Has the Gold Coasts salty air affected your Surfers Paradise Unit?

Living on the Gold Coast is an ocean breeze, literally. But did you know that salty air can take a toll on even your interior walls. Over time, salt particles can cause paint to crack, peel, fade, and even absorb moisture which may be the reason you landed here today. At Imperial Painters Gold Coast, we specialise and take great pride in preparing interior homes before applying Dulux Wash&Wear® formula, powered by 101 Barrier Technology®, that’s because it can stand up to the challenges of the Gold Coast’s salty air.

Its superior durability and advanced mould and mildew resistance ensure your walls stay protected, even in the humid coastal environment. The hard-wearing finish makes it easy to wipe away marks, scuffs, and stains with a damp cloth, so your walls maintain their freshly painted look for years. Built to resist the effects of salt-laden air, it’s the perfect solution for keeping your home pristine and beautiful in the Gold Coast climate.

FAQ

Big List of FAQ’s

Where space allows, larger furniture is carefully moved to the centre of the room and fully protected with plastic sheeting and masking. In tighter areas, furniture is safely relocated between rooms and rotated as needed to allow proper drying time. All flooring is also covered with high-quality drop sheets to protect against any paint drips or spills.

Most modern large paint brands are good these days. However, we choose to use Taubmans for its consistent quality and proven performance. Using Taubmans paints ensures a high-quality, professional finish backed by over a century of Australian expertise. Their products are specifically designed to withstand harsh local conditions, offering excellent durability, UV resistance, and long-lasting colour. With advanced technology for better coverage, stain resistance, and washability, Taubmans allows painters to achieve superior results with fewer coats—saving time while delivering a finish that looks better and lasts longer.

We understand that vacating your home during painting isn’t always possible, which is why we use water-based paints on 90% of surfaces. These paints dry significantly faster than old school oil-based options and are typically touch-dry within 45 minutes, helping minimise disruption to your daily routine.

Yes, absolutely. We’ll work with you to create a plan that suits your routine, painting in stages so you can comfortably remain in the home while work is underway. A full interior repaint can take up to 7 days depending on the size of the property, but we use water-based paints on most surfaces, which are low odour and typically touch dry within 45 minutes—helping minimise disruption and allowing rooms to be used again quickly.

Yes, as part of our prep work we fill holes, dents, and cracks with filler, sanding the area smooth, and priming it before painting to ensure a seamless finish. However, larger damage (like deep cracks or structural issues) may require a plasterer or additional repair work before painting can begin.

In most cases, no. If your home is furnished and flooring is in place, we use rollers and brushes to ensure a controlled, high-quality finish and to avoid any risk of overspray on furniture and flooring.

However, if the property is empty and you’re planning to replace the flooring, spray application can be a faster and more efficient option—this saving on time is reflected in your quote.

Most interior surfaces require two coats of premium paint to achieve a smooth, even finish with full coverage. However, when transitioning from a darker to a lighter colour, additional coats—typically three to four—may be required to ensure proper coverage and a consistent final result.

For new build homes with fresh Gyprock walls, a primer coat is required before applying the top coats to ensure proper adhesion and an even finish.

Yes, but it requires proper preparation. Walls and ceilings must first be thoroughly cleaned using a strong solution such as TSP to remove built-up residue. Once dry, an oil- or shellac-based primer is applied to seal in any remaining nicotine and prevent it from “bleeding” through. Without this crucial step, smoke stains will continue to show through, no matter how many coats of standard water-based paint are applied.

Our preferred product is Dulux’s PRECISION® Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker, chosen for its superior stain-blocking performance and ability to effectively seal in smoke and nicotine odours for a long-lasting finish.

We typically start at 7:00am and finish around 4:00pm each day. If the property is vacant and accessible, we can begin earlier and work later to help complete the project faster. If you’re comfortable providing access, we’re also happy to work up to 6 days a week to ensure your job is completed as efficiently as possible.

Brand new, unpainted gyprock walls require a primer coat before any top coats are applied for proper adhesion. A high-quality all-in-one acrylic primer, sealer, and undercoat designed specifically for this purpose. Using regular wall paint as a primer is not cost-effective, as bare gyprock is highly porous and will absorb a large amount of paint, increasing material usage and the risk of poor adhesion or peeling.

Paint isn’t cheap—so it shouldn’t be used to do a primer’s job. Skipping proper priming often means you’ll need three coats of paint: one just to seal the surface, followed by your standard two finish coats. By using the correct, more cost-effective primer first, you typically only need two top coats, saving both time and materials. There’s no benefit in soaking porous walls with premium paint when a purpose-built primer can achieve the same result at a fraction of the cost.

Previously painted walls do not need priming and are ready to be rolled.

If trims and doors have previously been finished with oil-based paint, they will need to be properly sanded and primed with a high-quality oil-based primer before any water-based top coats are applied. This is essential, as water-based paints do not adhere well to oil-based surfaces and can easily scratch or peel without the correct preparation.

Water-based paints have become more popular because they’re faster, safer, and more practical for modern painting. They dry quickly (often within an hour), have low odour and lower VOCs (Especially Taubmans Pure Performance range), making them much more pleasant and environmentally friendly to use indoors.

Secondly, they also don’t yellow over time like oil-based paints, are easier to clean up with water, and have improved significantly in durability and finish thanks to modern paint technology. Overall, they offer a high-quality result with less smell & mess.

Yes, using masking tape neatly pushed down between the carpet and skirting board, we can assure no paint will ruin it.

Determining whether your existing paint is oil- or water-based is simple. Apply a small amount of methylated spirits to a cloth and gently rub a test area on the wall. If colour transfers onto the cloth, the paint is water-based; if not, it’s likely oil-based. If your home has been painted within the last 10 years, all paint inside your home is most likely water based.

Yes. As part of our quoting process, we carry out a quick roof inspection to check for any cracked tiles or deteriorated pointing. If repairs are needed, we’ll organise tile replacement and repointing before painting to ensure the roof is in the best possible condition for a long-lasting finish.

Yes, you’re welcome to supply your own paint. However, we don’t recommend opting for lower-quality brands, as this can affect the final finish and durability.
