History of Limewashing

Limewashing has been around for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. Since Dulux hadn’t been invented yet (they were a few years early), builders turned to crushed limestone and water to protect brick, stone, and masonry while creating the timeless finish we still admire today.

Throughout Europe, particularly in countries such as England, France, Italy, and Germany, limewashed homes became a defining architectural feature. The soft, weathered appearance developed over time has become synonymous with classic cottages, farmhouses, and luxury European estates.

Today, exterior limewashing is making its comeback offering a more graceful softer white than modern paint can. Unlike paint, which sits on top of the brick and creates a uniform coating, limewash is absorbed into the masonry. This creates a soft, breathable finish that enhances the brick’s natural texture rather than hiding it. The result is an authentic, timeless appearance that develops even more character as it weathers.

Brushing lime (limewash) is generally preferred over spraying because it forces the material directly into the pores of the masonry, providing superior bonding and durability. Brushing also allows for the easy creation of a traditional, variegated, and aged appearance, whereas spraying often requires heavy dilution, frequent machine clogs, and extra cleanup

The coat will dry and begin to cures in 24 hours. We only apply when we are sure of nice weather.

Limewash is designed to age, not fail. Instead of peeling or cracking like traditional paint, it gradually softens and develops a beautifully weathered appearance. This natural patina is one of the reasons limewash has remained a favourite for centuries. After the first 2 coats, a refresh coat is recommended every 7-8 years.
